OUR HISTORY.

Masisi territory is one of six territories in the North-Kivu Province situated in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Over the past three decades, Masisi and Rutshuru territories have been ravaged by war and tribal conflicts. Before the start of the war, for years, agriculture and animal husbandry were its economic engine and the main sources of income for a large segment of its population. But the war left millions of people in extreme poverty.

Due to chronic insecurity and lack of road infrastructure, many have never been able to rebuild their livelihood. Parents relied on income from agriculture and animal husbandry to pay for their children’s education.  Lack of universities in Masisi, high tuition fees, and high living costs in cities where there are universities, many parents fail to send their high school graduates from children to university.

Many high school graduates end up in the artisanal mining sector, working in a very high-risk environment and earning very little.  Many Congolese in the diaspora by sending regular remittances to their families and friends, mainly to cover for health care cost, rent and education payment, and other basic needs. These individual initiatives make a difference to several families, but with limited impacts in the community.

Therefore, to have a bigger impact in local communities and promote sustainable development in Masisi, IWACU SOLIDARITY ASSOCIATION  provides a platform which brings together the global Congolese diaspora community to provide an education sponsorship to the most vulnerable and bright high school graduates.
